Artist's Statement

I am inspired by the country pottery of ancient Korea, early America and 18th and 19th century England and France. Like so many potters before me, I throw on a simple kick wheel and make my own glazes from feldspars, clays and sand. I once fire my pots in a tightly packed gas kiln which I built. My pots – rolled rim mixing bowls, oval bakers, covered dishes, platters and whimsical pieces for the garden – are meant to be used and enjoyed. They are quiet pots that I offer as a bit of calm in these stressful times. In addition to getting my hands in clay, I write about pottery and gardens. Recently, my book Clay (yes, I wrote the book on clay!) was reissued by Brandies University Press. Timber Press published my A Garden Miscellany. I hope that my pottery, books and gardens give others as much pleasure as they give me.
